Download free invoice template in Microsoft Excel format.
Are you the owner of, or planning to launch a service-based business? Do you have all the documents you need, including a service invoice template that can help you get paid for the services you provide? The service invoice is unlike other types of invoices in that it typically includes a field or fields in which you can bill a customer for your time and/or labor. In this article we will discuss how you can use a service invoice template to benefit your service-based company or organization, along with some of the items and information you should look for when searching online for a template that will suit your purpose(s).
Why Should I Use a Service Invoice Template?
As the Internet continues to expand, the number of affordable, and often free business documents that are available continues to grow. Of course, you don’t have to take advantage of these templates. You still have the option of purchasing hard copy invoices in bulk, but keep in mind these can be very expensive, especially if you want to have them customized. You could also purchase computerized invoice software, but this, too, can be enormously expensive and may take weeks to learn how to use. For these reasons alone, a service invoice template, one that is easy to use and very affordable, might be the best way to go.
A service invoice template typically contains all the fields you will need to fill out and issue professional-looking invoices to your customers. You can even customize the design to make them stand out. Most templates allow you to choose from a wide array of fonts and colors to create unique, original, and best of all, functional invoices for your business.
What You Should Look For In a Service Invoice Template
The format and style of your service invoice template is completely up to you. Choose from a portrait or landscape layout, and create your own color scheme and design. There are, though, certain fields/information that must be present. These include:
• Service Business’ Details. At the top of the invoice should be your business’ name, address and telephone number. You can also include your email address and/or website for marketing purposes.
• Buyer’s Details. The full name and address of the buyer also needs to be printed, which will help with record keeping and future marketing.
• Invoice Number. The invoice number typically appears in the top right or left-hand corner of the invoice. These numbers are essential for easy filing and recordkeeping.
• Cost of Materials. This field is only necessary for businesses that use products or materials to complete their service (construction companies, landscapers, mechanics, etc.). This field is not necessary, however, for businesses such as consultants, therapists, etc. that do not use products or materials.
• Service Description. A brief, yet detailed description of the service provided is also necessary.
• Cost of Service/Hourly Labor Costs. This is where the price of the service is listed. Some services will have a flat fee while some will be expressed in terms of hourly labor costs.
• Payment Terms. Defines the preferred payment method and outlines the terms of payment, as well as any late fees.
Handwritten service invoices look sloppy and unprofessional and are often difficult to read. With a service invoice template you can create professional-looking invoices that are designed just the way you want them, making your service-based company stand apart from the competition.
